Where clients become family

Where clients become family.

We are Philip and Sherri Capps, and this is our family firm in Lyons, Kansas.

Our story

Our story.

In 2016, Sherri took a receptionist job to make a little extra money while her oldest son started his junior year of high school. She asked so many questions that first year that somebody finally suggested she take a class and learn to prepare taxes herself.

So she did. Ten tax seasons later, she had managed an office, sat across the desk from hundreds of neighbors, and learned the thing that changed everything:

Taxes are rarely just about numbers. They are about families. Small businesses chasing dreams. Farmers, retirees, new parents, and people doing their best to build a good life.

Sometimes helping someone meant finding a deduction. Sometimes it just meant letting them sit for a bit with a cup of coffee. Both mattered.

Now her son Philip is opening Capps Family Tax & Bookkeeping in Lyons, and Sherri manages the office, serving the community that has supported their family for years. A firm run by a mother and son, for the town that raised them.

That is where the name comes from. Around here, clients do not stay customers for long. They become family.

When you call, you get one of us. Not a call center, not a different preparer every February. The same person, every year.

Why this site reads the way it does

Why this site reads the way it does.

Sherri is visually impaired. It is part of why this site reads the way it does: large print, high contrast, no clutter. That is a genuine part of who runs the firm, and it is the reason the whole site is built to be easy to read for everyone who walks through the door or opens it on their phone.

In this picture, the machine on Sherri's desk is a video magnifier that helps her read printed material. Your paperwork gets the same careful eye as everyone else's, every time.

Community roots

We are one of you.

We are not a chain that parachuted in. We are part of Lyons.

You will find us at the Chamber, at Fair on the Square in September, and around the courthouse where the whole county does business. Every month we host Gather & Grow, a low-pressure session where local owners learn something useful and get to know each other before tax season ever comes up.

That is the whole point. In a town this size, trust travels by relationship. We would rather earn a place in your circle than run an ad at you.

The year-round promise

Not just in April. All year.

Most offices go quiet after the filing deadline, right when the IRS letters start showing up. We do not work that way.

We are here in July when a letter lands, here in the fall when you sell cattle or clean up the books, and here at year-end when it is time to plan. The person who filed your return is the person who picks up the phone. All year, every year.

Straight about who we are

Straight about who we are.

We will tell you plainly what we are qualified to do and how we keep current, because you deserve to know exactly who is handling your money. The full detail here is being finalized, and we would rather leave it blank than claim a title we have not confirmed.
